United Way receives grants to address housing needs in Ottawa County

Greater Ottawa County United Way is pleased to announce that its Ottawa Housing Next program was recently awarded grants from the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area and from the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.

For more than two years, Greater Ottawa County United Way has led a community-wide conversation about a lack of affordable housing in Ottawa County. As a result of this process, Ottawa Housing Next was formed. Ottawa Housing Next is a collective impact effort by leaders in the business, nonprofit and government sectors to create more affordable housing in Ottawa County.

Six strategies to create more affordable housing options were identified, and committees are taking next steps to move the ideas forward. The strategies include: private/nonprofit partnerships, inclusionary zoning, housing trust fund, tax credits, housing case management and income supports.

The grants from both foundations will allow Greater Ottawa County United Way to continue facilitating the Ottawa Housing Next work groups based on the six strategies listed above. The work groups will prioritize needs, identify projects, and take actions toward creating more affordable housing options in Ottawa County.
